Description: Dated April 26, 1937, this photograph shows a view of Cedarville College in Greene County, Ohio. The General Synod of the Reformed Presbyterian Church was granted a charter in 1887 by the Ohio State Legislature for Cedarville College, but it wasn’t until 1894 that it officially opened. The college was released from the General Synod in 1928 in order to gain financial assistance from the Presbyterian Church, and when denied, were left with no supporting constituency. The college continued to struggle financially and finally, after much negotiation, the college merged with the Baptist Bible Institute of Cleveland (B.B.I.) in 1953. The institution continued to emphasize religion, requiring students to attend bible classes during their time at Cedarville College. Now known as Cedarville University, bible study is still required today. The institution also requires students and faculty members to sign a pledge every year to uphold their own and the college's religious morals. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Aerial view showing the Cedarville Earthworks, likely referring to the Williamson Mound and the Pollock Works that are now found within the property of Indian Mound Reserve, managed by Greene County Parks & Trails, near the village of Cedarville, Ohio. Williamson Mound is attributed to people of the Adena culture, and in 1881, it was described as 40 feet high and 150 feet in circumference, located near the banks of Massie's Creek. Pollock Works, constructed by the Hopewell culture on a promontory to the south of the creek, consisted of small crescent-shaped earthworks and a walled structure featuring three gateways. Description: Drawing of an ancient mound near Cedarville, Ohio. The drawing is on the inside front cover of "Handy Book for Collectors: A Short Description of Most of the Varieties of Indian and Mound Builder Implements, Arranged and Classified According to Size and Use" by W. K. Moorehead, a well-known American archeologist. The image is a drawing of an tall mound that situation in a field near a stream. Three tiny human figures stand between the stream and the mound. The caption reads: "Ancient Mound near Cedarville, Ohio. Relics from this Mound for sale, as follows: Fragment of pottery, Indian bones, and Arrow Head, by Mail 25 cents. W.K. Moorehead, Xenia, Ohio." Fascinated by Indians and their culture since his boyhood in Xenia, Moorehead enrolled in Denison University (Granville, Ohio) in 1884 and began collecting hundreds of specimens from Indian sites near Granville. He later worked at the Smithsonian Institution and then conducted his own exploration of Fort Ancient in Ohio. He also conducted explorations of the Hopewell site near Chillicothe, Ohio, and at pueblos in the Southwest U.S. In 1894 Moorehead became curator of the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society, a post he held for three years. In 1908 President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Moorehead to the Board of the U.S. Board of Indian Commissioners. He served on the board until 1934, when it was abolished by executive order. In the earlier part of his career, Moorehead built a personal collection of artifacts found at his excavation sites, he later became a strong advocate for just treatment of American Indians. Description: Photograph of the headstone at the grave of Hallie Q. Brown. Brown was the daughter of freed slaves Thomas and Frances Jane who were actively involved with the Underground Railroad. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Wilberforce University and later became Dean of Women at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Brown helped found the National Association of Colored Women (NACW), was elected Secretary of Education of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1900 and served as the 7th National President of the NACW. Description: Photograph of W. J. Vernon, an unspecified friend, relative or associate of Colonel Charles Young. Charles Young was the first African American to reach the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Army and, at the time of his death in 1922, was the highest-ranking African American officer in the Army. He is known for having been forced into retirement due to health concerns before the start of World War I and later riding from Wilberforce, Ohio, to Washington, D.C. to prove his physical fitness for duty. Description: Obituary published in the Dayton Daily News for Mr. Robert Harvey Taylor, the husband of Yvonne Walker-Taylor, who passed away on December 27, 1983. Yvonne Walker-Taylor was the daughter of Reverend Dougal Ormonde Beaconfield Walker, president of Wilberforce University in the 1940s. Description: This is a lithograph of an oil painting of Me Te A, chief of the Potawatomi Tribe, published in volume one of "History of the Indian Tribes of North America" by Thomas Loraine McKenney and James Hall. Me Te A's village was on the St. Joseph River near modern Cedarville, Indiana. Thomas McKenny served as the United States Superintendent of Indian Trade in 1821 and commissioned portraits of American Indian leaders who visited Washington D.C. to negotiate treaties with the United States federal government in order to to preserve the memory and history of America's native peoples. After the paintings were completed, he commissioned lithographs of the 300 paintings and compiled them into three volumes of "History of the Indian Tribes of North America" where a short biography accompanied each portrait. The paintings were housed at the Smithsonian Institution Building, commonly referred to as the Castle, and in 1868 all but five were destroyed in a devastating fire. View on Ohio Memory.
